Trailer Debut For ‘Spiral: From The Book Of SAW’

I’ve been incredibly curious about this project since it was announced last year. Just exactly what was Chris Rock up to – and would it breathe fresh life into this rather stale franchise?

I’m not sure this trailer answers that question – but there are somethings I really like, and some things I find annoying. Before I tear into it though – let’s have a look, shall we? Here is our first look at SPIRAL: From The Book of SAW

So – let’s go over the likes first – I love the title. Love the whole “Book of Saw” moniker and the fact that it really makes it feel like Rock and company are going to go in a different direction.

I like the overall look – the vibe if you will. It very much plays like more of a procedural – than the old formula we’ve grown accustomed to with these films. A breath of fresh air for sure. I like the cast – I mean, honestly – you can’t get much better than Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. But – I’ve got some issues as well.

This trailer really shows us nothing – other than Rock and his partner looking at each other – then at something else, then at each other again. We get lots of Rock looking at things – sometimes perplexed, sometimes annoyed, sometimes shocked – and we get a wee tiny bit of SLJ – doing what he does best – looking pissed and swearing.

I’m sure this is all by design – and I get the feeling that we might be in store for something truly unique – although the trailer didn’t have much meat to it – I did like what little tidbits we were given – and it’s enough to keep me interested.

Long time franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman returns for this outing – he previously played in Jigsaws lair for SAW II, SAW III and SAW IV – so he knows his way around the tri-cycle.

The storyline for this chapter:

“reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer … This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous SAW films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”

May 15th is when we’ll all put our asses in the seats for this one.
