I wanted to start this review by saying Happy Thanksgiving to the Grue-believers out there. Things I’m thankful for in the realm of Scream Queens: I have not been completely Murphy’d yet, Chad and his Radness, the casting of the show especially Jamie Lee Curtis as Dean Munsch, Emma Roberts as Chanel Oberlin, Charisma Carpenter as No. 2’s mom (even though she didn’t get much screen time and last but not least finding a hidden gem in Glen Powell who brilliantly (or not so brilliantly) plays Chad Radwell. I am also thankful for the crew here at Gruesome magazine, and I want to say a special thanks for the opportunity Doc, you rock! Also I am thankful for all of you fans that frequent our site and Facebook pages, without you guys and gals we would just be a bunch of horror/genre geeks that like to hear ourselves. Let’s carve into “Thanksgiving” and see if it was overdone or if it left me longing for leftovers.
We start out the episode with Chad’s wanger being stressed out due to Hester’s (Lea Michele) pregnancy. Chanel cheers Chad up with her reveal of getting rid of Hester by shoving her down the steps. Alas as been the case throughout the season, the body has gone missing from the freezer. Chad was disappointed that he did not get to see Hester’s hot dead body; we all know of his affinity for necrophilia. Meanwhile we get a cute little Thanksgiving scene with Gigi and the remaining Reds who has yet to be revealed. All we currently know is that he/she was the second bathtub baby.
We get an otherwise forgetful scene as No. 3 goes home for Thanksgiving to her dysfunctional family who is having their famous frozen dinners. Her dad is upset about two things; No. 3 being late and Cutler not starting for the Bears. She is relegated to the back row of the theater seating with the maids which upsets her and causes her to head back to Kappa. As she arrives back at Kappa she is just in time to see Dean Munsch slaughtering Tiburon, the turkey she had just pardoned the day before.
When we get to the Radwell homestead we get a fun scene and we get to see just how messed up Chad’s family is. Here we see some familiar faces from the past including 80’s sitcom Growing Pains dad Alan Thicke as Mr. Radwell, Julia Duffy who has starred in shows ranging from The Love Boat to Disney Shows to The League as Mrs. Bunny Radwell, the governator Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son Patrick as Thad Radwell and Chad Michael Murray of One Tree Hill fame as Chad’s brother Brad. This scene I found quite entertaining from the things they were thankful for like the amount of hardcore porn available online to Chanel’s thankful retort of the table being too long to reach Mrs. Radwell to choke her after her gold digging tirade on Chanel. Just as the scene is winding down a special dinner guest arrives, that’s right Chanel No. 6 aka Hester. Apparently the neck brace saved her from breaking her neck during the fall and the cold floor of the walk-in freezer aided the healing process and possibly cured her scoliosis. After announcing that she is carrying Chad’s baby, Bunny goes protests saying that she is lying and that it is not water weight she’s carrying, it’s pooh belly!
Back at the Kappa house Dean Munsch, Wes (Oliver Hudson), Grace (Skyler Samuels), Zayday (Keke Palmer), No. 3 (Billie Lourde) and No. 5 (Abigail Breslin) decide to play a little game before dinner to advocate their opinion of who the other killer is. Many theories were expunged here but no killer figured out yet. We do find out that Wes was also the father of the bathtub babies, apparently he was a man slut back in the day who didn’t wear condoms, as he states no one wore condoms in the 90’s.
Back at the Radwell homestead, the family continues to insult Hester and of all people Chanel sticks up for her and goes on one of her classic tirades. My favorite insult was to Chad’s mom stating she is a leathery excuse for a mom that looks like an ostrich hyde clutch from last season that learned to talk; this elicited quite a bit of laughter from my wife. Chanel and Hester leave together as Chanel ends things with Chad.
Back at the Kappa house everyone including the recently arrived guests Chanel and Hester gather around the table for dinner. Even Chad decided to stop by due to his love of turkey. The episode ends in screams from everyone as the lid is removed from the serving tray revealing Gigi’s dismembered head.
Although not my favorite episode of the season, it definitely had its moments. As you may have heard during our recent Gruesome Magazine podcast I came into this series with a severe bias. That bias has since been neutralized with witty writing, great direction and just flat out funny moments. Thanksgiving was directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Brad Falchuck. With three more episodes left, I am happy to report Scream Queens has been renewed for a second season. The question is will it be a continuation with the same characters or will it follow Murphy’s formula of the same actors playing different parts in a totally different storyline. Either way I am in!
