In the ’70s and 80’s the films of David Cronenberg were legendary – SCANNERS, RABID, VIDEODROME, all the way up to THE FLY – all masterpieces of what came to be known as “body horror” and while the director’s more recent works have all been masterful, with CRIMES OF THE FUTURE he appears to be returning to the sub-genre he created – and in a very big way. Check out the trailer.
Being an A-list director – it only makes sense he can gather an A-list cast – this one stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos.
Story wise – this is the synopsis:
“As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner, Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), a celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances.
“Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.”
Pretty heady stuff – but, if that trailer holds true, we are in for a tour de force of Cronenberg coolness.
CRIMES OF THE FUTURE hit NY and LA on June 3rd – the rest of us get to check it out on June 10th.
