The Talisman is an epic novel – penned by Stephen King and Peter Straub, both horror literature titans in their own right – they collaborated on the novel which was originally released in 1984 bringing us a breathtaking blend of horror and fantasy that since the day it was released has screamed for some kind of screen adaptation.
Now – 37 years later fans of the book will finally get a chance to stroll into The Territories – as envisioned by Netflix wunderkinds – The Duffer Brothers. In case you don’t know who they are – I have two words for you – Stranger Things.
Steven Spielberg has owned the film rights to the novel since before the book was even published and has been attempting to get some kind of project off the ground ever since – it seems that mission has finally been accomplished.
If you’re not familiar with The Talisman – here is the breakdown of the novel that we all got back in the day:
“Talisman tells of a 12-year old boy named Jack Sawyer who sets off on an epic road-trip quest in order to save his dying mother’s life. He is in search of the Talisman, a powerful relic that can not only heal his mother but, as he learns, save the world. Sawyer’s journey criss-crosses two realities: the America we know and its dangerous, fantasy-world twin, The Territories.”
Seems to me that this kind of tale would be perfect for The Duffers – given that they are well versed in telling tales about kids going up against insurmountable odds to save the world.
This will be being produced for Netflix – with Spielberg Exec producing.
Lots to look forward to on this one. It also seems prudent to mention that there is a second chapter to Jack Sawyer’s tale – that King and Straub also collaborated on titled Black House – with a long-promised third chapter (book) rumored to perhaps one day to grace our eyeballs.
The point being – if The Talisman takes off – there is plenty of fodder for more flicks. Will be fun to watch it all come together.
