The Answer is a Sci Fi film that was both written and directed by Iqbal Ahmed. The story follows a young man Bridd Cole played by Austin Herbert whose normal life as a mail clerk gets turned upside down when he shows up at home to find his place a wreck, his boss dead and troopers with awesome looking blades garbed in black waiting for him. Teamed with his love interest Charlotte Parker played by Alexis Carra they go on the run together to find The Answer to why these men are after him.
If this premise interests you, you will, unfortunately, be let down because with an opening that provides some intrigue The Answer does little else worthwhile to hold the viewer’s attention. The opening sequence had the masked men in black practically decapitate a young man and take his pregnant girlfriend hostage. They deliver the baby who immediately dies upon birth in the hands of the would-be leader of the “men in black”. This along with the introduction of our main characters was enough to keep my attention for the first 20 minutes of The Answer.
We find out that Bridd’s parents passed away 20 years ago after Bridd receives a mysterious package from his mom. Without getting into great detail the package contained a video message from his father revealing that both he was an alien. Bridd begins to realize that the strange things he has been noticing about himself are starting to make some sense. This causes Bridd and Charlotte’s first date to be a bit odd ending with the flight from the men in black I mentioned above.
The storyline from there falls flat. The Answer could have delved more into the development of Bridd’s character coming to grips with finding out that he is at least half alien. Instead, we get some sub-par action sequences as Bridd and Charlotte flee to a hiding spot at Bridd’s old summer home. From here the focus seems more on the budding relationship between the two. This, unfortunately, does not help develop an interesting storyline for The Answer as Charlotte has commitment issues and Bridd is looking for the love of a lifetime. The Answer would have been better served developing more of an arc with other characters such as Bridd’s best friend Trent played by Adam Shapiro. Unfortunately, the story seemed more interested in quickly killing anyone other than our two leads whose roles were not quite enough to keep this film entirely interesting and ultimately caring if we indeed find The Answer“.
In the end, The Answer is a romantic chase film with sci fi and horror elements. I will not spoil the film here but I will tell you that answers are found to the questions: Why does Bridd have Matrix-esque ability? Who are the men in black? Why are they after Bridd? What was up with the baby scene at the beginning of the film? Will Bridd and Charlotte make it? If you are interested in the answers to these questions then yes, watch The Answer. If you are wondering if I recommend The Answer, well my answer is below.
